How to update firmware on the Samsung F480 (Tocco)
This information is taken mostly from GSM-Forum.com, but I have compiled all the information myself and updated it with links for software and other information. Enjoy!
A couple of things you need to know first.
DISCLAIMER
This guide has been taken from several sources. Please do not blame me if anything goes wrong. Following these instructions has worked fine for me but I cannot guarantee it will work the same for you.
Make sure to backup all the content on your phone as everything will be deleted including your address book!
You need to have installed Samsung PC Studio first and have it working. It comes packed with the phone or you can download it from the Samsung website.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?prd_mdl_cd=...
You will also need the USB cable that was supplied with the phone. Once you have all this you can flash your Tocco!
1. Firstly you must download the Samsung MultiLoader software. I use version 5.33 as I have had no problems with it at all. You can find it attached to this article.
2. Download the latest unbranded firmware. There are some links below which you may find useful to find it. I am currently using F48FXEID1. It is the Eastern European Pink edition from April 2009 which includes some extra backdrops and fonts. The default language is English.
3. Turn off you phone and remove the sim card and memory card from your F480. Power it back on while holding the camera and volume down keys simultaneously (as well as the power on button!).
You should see something like this on your screen:
DEMSBL BOOT Loader for MSM6280
Downloader Ver 5.32
4. Open Samsung MultiLoader and select the firmware files as demonstrated in the screen grab below. When selecting Rsrc2, make sure you select the file which has (Low) in the filename. This is to do with debugging so selecting (Mid) or (High) will slow the interface down (even more). If you're feeling adventurous you can select Full Download and add the BOOTFILES folder to the Boot option. If I'm honest I'm not sure what it changes, but I've tried it myself and it didn't cause any problems. Do not hold me responsible if you brick your phone though!
DISCLAIMER 2
Somebody has complained in the comments that flashing using the BOOTFILES option has bricked his phone so don't say I haven't warned you.
5. Connect your phone to the PC and click port search in MultiLoader to detect your phone.
6. Hit Download to update your firmware!
This will take a minute or two, your phone will then restart and hey presto, you have updated and debranded your phone!
This does not unlock your phone, but it does add some nice widgets and gets rid of any annoying branding (such as on my Orange UK phone).

Ive got the F480XEID1 firmware
pretty cool with widget such as goggle , messages calculator Bluetooth alarm but I can't see the answering machine which was suppose to be in message. could I get it back
can I have a suggestion about a firmware that would have it plz and ty
btw the explanation was really helpful ty
I agree with you.
Bought an old Tocco for work but wanted to bring it more up to date.
The addition of the new widgets on the widget screen helps.
Don't think there is anything out there to get the Tocco even close to todays Android phones... nice if there was.
Used the latest Samsung PC Studio to help me flash...the older PC Studios had dodgy drivers...so phone was not recognised in boot mode.
Hope this helps some of you. Cheers.
Glad it worked out for you. You have the last firmware that was created so there isn't going to be any out there with additional features.
Beautifful!!! keep the good work !!!
i baught my phone from kuwait, now i am trying to install firmware for india, is that the problem ??? my phone does not detecting when connecting..
Have you definitely powered up the phone holding the correct keys?
'Power it back on while holding the camera and volume down keys simultaneously (as well as the power on button!).'
when i connect my phone and click port search, my phone does not listed there..
It works like a charm. Thank you!
Its not working for me. I've tried everywhere firmware and after the amss reaches 100% it fails and the phone restarts but the loading bar reaches 3/4 (not the multiloader bar). On multiloader it says
Download Start Ch[0]
Amss 30677.0KB OK[100.6s]
ERR : NAK_INVALID_ADDR 0
ERR : Rsrc1 Erase
Please help
I've never seen this error when flashing my old device. I would see if you can find you operator original operator firmware somewhere.
I think this is a limited version. Because it has the 2008 Beijin Olympic things on it
that was my phone btw
i've fixed it. i used the bootfiles as well and now it works
Thanks for your clear explanations. I have a F480 from Orange Switzerland now unlocked and just flashed it with the LaFleur edition of the software you mentioned. Amazing post. Thanks
hi, ive just replaced the 3 buttons at the bottom of the f480.... i took it apart and used a part from ebay that i bought.... the phone powers on but it wont power off, the flash no longer works and i can enter the camera via he touch screen but it wont take pictures the camera button doesnt work. but if i use them to acces the altenate startup to flash ym phone they work then? i have flash my phone with 2 different firmwares... can anyone confirm if there ismroe that one part type for this phone. a si said ti powers on but once on the its like it becomes disabled. can anyone advise?
I have same problem, this just hapend before 1 day.
Power buton work only in power on. No power off. Camera button not work. Touch screen working. Wright now i update firmware but nothing....
Any solutions???
Sorry but can't really help you on this one. I dismantled my F480 to replace the chassis and destroyed the phone in the process as its all packed in very tightly! I would make sure none of the buttons are wedged on and maybe use some contact cleaner to make sure there isn't any dirt on the connectors.
Which latest firmware i should use, I m resident of India and using Samsung F480
I'm not sure which the latest version is for India. Take a look at samsungflash.tk. Jordan keeps it up to date with the latest firmware.
Nice tutorial it helped me very much.
Greetings from Romania.
thanks! glad it helped.
hii i need help before i click download it keeps saying selct image what does mean what shall i do
hi there. not sure on this error. have you selected all the files required in multiloader? it sounds like you haven't selected all the image files.
hi there i am wanting to update my phone as well when i click on the rsrc2 i am not sure what to load or what images if anyone can help my number is 0272707087
I suggest you re-read the tutorial! Basically there should be a file in the firmware folder named some thing like 'Rsrc2_F480(Low).rc2'. Select that. If there are others like 'Rsrc2_F480(High).rc2' don't select those as they will just mean your phone works harder debugging.
This worked brilliantly. Not only is the information easy to understand, but your response to users is always so polite and helpful. I used these instructions and now have a great new interface! Really appreciate your help with this.
Glad to know it helped and was easy to understand! Thats what I was aiming for :)
hi there firstly i find your advice fantastic but just scared to up date my phone F480. Why are the programes blocking I just cant do a thing once that happens?
What do you mean that your programs are blocking? Blocking what exactly? Do you mean its freezing?
Hi, my f480 was recently unlocked, it worked perfectly, after performing a firmware upgrade the simlock is back again?? Is this normal behaviour? Should i go back to a phoneshop to get unlocked or is this something i can do myself? Again, before the firmware upgrade the phone was simlock free.
Hi,
I have the same phone and its asking for phone lock code. please help me that how you did that ??
Flashing the firmware does not unlock your phone. You should phone your operator and ask for the sim unlock code.
I unlocked my phone after I had flashed it myself, but I have flashed since and it is still unlocked. As far as I know upgrading the firmware should have no effect on whether the phone is sim locked or not. You can't unlock your phone by flashing new firmware so i can't imagine you can lock it either with the same process.
Hi there
Thank you for your thread I have F480 and i want ask you does these firmware’s support other language like Arabic language and if doesn’t how can I find this firmware because I am facing one problem with this phone I can’t send SMS messages only receiving!
Hi there. Please take a look at the bottom of the guide. There are links to various sites where you may find Arabic firmware. I'm sure someone will have it!
Hi
i found one frieware but when i click on download it's give me error
Download Start Ch[0]
Warring : Security fail!!
Warring : Phone Info fail!!
ERR : Diff Amss Nand Size 4000 20000

Your error basically says that the files you are trying to flash your phone with are a different size to the ones already on it. What firmware link did you use and what is the firmware version number? Have you definitely downloaded the firmware for the right phone?
Current frimeware : F480IJPIG4
what i downloaded : F480JPHK1
from this link http://www.mediafire.com/?tyl7hldozzb
the reason for upgrade i can’t send SMS anything else working fine maybe no need to upgrade but i didn't find solution
Best Regards
sorry i notice that my Phone is F480I Not F480 without I
let me serach again :)
Thank you
You say on your page: "This will take a minute or two, your phone will then restart and hey presto, you have updated and debranded your phone!"
The whole update process took about 8 minutes. The file load to phone took 430,8 seconds. (It was said after flashing.) 430 s = 7 minutes.
The info that widges were lost, is false. The guy who told it said that he had not noticed the widget settings in the menu.
Thanks for posting. I guess if it takes some people longer to flash their phone this will stop them panicking. For me it only took a couple of minutes max.
"For me it only took a couple of minutes max."
You can't speed up the file load process wich takes about 7 minutes. Plus one minute booting etc.
I think that there are no reason to update from version F480XBHH5 to F480XXIB1. The only what you get is a couple new totally unnecessary widgets, and a new irritating Samsung fun club commecrial after phone start up.
NONE OF THE BUGS IN THE PHONE ARE FIXED.
I heard that it is not always wise to update firmware. When you update, you may lose some useful widgets and get instead of the 'commercial' widgets.
You may lose "messages", "memo" and "calculator" widgets and get intsead of them "Google" and "weather report" etc.
Is there any lists of differences of different revisions?
I've never lost any widgets from upgrading to newer firmware, only gained widgets. I certainly have all the widgets you listed in the lastest european firmware. Sometimes you just have to re-enable them. I think there is some info on http://samsungflash.webs.com/ or http://samsungflash.webs.com/ about differences between firmware versions.
I read from another forum the claim that you may lose some widgets when updating. (Non english forum.) I asked if he had tried to enable the lost widgets, but I didn't get answer. Do you know if the version F480XXIB1 have the calculator ect widgets? (I suppose that only the default widgetes have changed? If this is true, then I shall update too.)
My intention is to update from F480XBHH5 to F480XXIB1 because the older version has some irritating bugs. (I do not know if they are corrected to the newer version.)
Here is one irritating bug example:
http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kx/Samsung/F480_clock.jpg
The clock shows wrong time in some circumtances. (Escpecially after long use of camera.) The clock widget which was already on the screen shows wrong time but the clock which I drag form the left panel shows right time immediately after dragging.
After 0-59 seconds the wrong showing clock jumps to right time.
It is not easy to find what are the differnces between different versions.
All I can tell you is that I have never lost any widgets going through various version upgrades. You will need to enable any widgets that you have turned on/off as the phone will be reset to factory settings. I am using the latest pink version firmware F48FXEID1 and noticed no problems. Here's the whole list of widgets in F48FXEID1.
